Every book a beginning
Every child a reader

Welcome to Torquay Reads: a new charity committed to ensuring every child in Torquay has books of their own.

We are a registered charity based in Torquay.  We know that there is a direct link between reading / book ownership and well-being and success in later life.

One in five young children do not own a single book* yet children who own a book of their own are six times more likely to read above the expected level for their age. Research shows that reading for pleasure is a key indicator of higher earnings and economic stability later on in life**.
19.2% of children aged 5-8 do not have access to books at home, National Literacy Trust 2023

Torquay Reads Challenge

Books can be expensive and Torquay . Fewer children who receive free school meals report having a book of their own compared to their peers who do not receive free school meals.

Our aim is to ensure that every child in Torquay owns age-appropriate books throughout their childhood.

We’re a new organisation so please do consider getting involved.
