One in five young children do not own a single book* yet children who own a book of their own are six times more likely to read above the expected level for their age. Research shows that reading for pleasure is a key indicator of higher earnings and economic stability later on in life**.

Torquay Reads Challenge
Books can be expensive and Torquay . Fewer children who receive free school meals report having a book of their own compared to their peers who do not receive free school meals.
Our aim is to ensure that every child in Torquay owns age-appropriate books throughout their childhood.
